Getting started...?

We recommend Scott McCloud’s Making Comics if you need some fun reading material to get you started.

Payment

We don’t pay artists, sadly. The money that we make through advertising and sales pays for print and marketing costs, and financing the next issue of Faction. Faction is intended as a platform for artists, it is not a money making venture.

Ownership of your work

Ownership of any work that appears in Faction remains with the artist. You can put it online, sell it or do what you like with it. We do ask that you don’t make it available for download too soon after it appears in Faction however!

Use our mailing list

If you’ve already created a comic - but it is too long or the wrong size to fit into Faction, we’re happy to discuss distributing it digitally via our email list. We’ve got lots of readers dying to read some exciting new work.

However - we will be the final judges of whether we feel it is a good fit with Faction’s audience.

Make sure you let us know if you’re planning on submitting - rather than just sending us the finished work. Faction is an edited publication, and we’re choosy about what we print! So send us some samples of your work before getting started, and we can give you a yes or no then.

Our criteria

Great art and great storytelling is the most important thing! You must have a good command of the comics medium.

If you’re just starting out in comics, chances are you still need to iron out a few wrinkles in your technique. It’s pretty rare that we would print an artist’s first-ever comic. However, you’re welcome to try and prove us wrong!

If you’re not sure, we recommend you take a look at the work of some professional comic artists and ask yourself how you stack up. If you really think your work is comparable (or better!) then we’d love to see some of your work.

Bear in mind that Faction won’t print overly offensive material. We’re pretty liberal - so swearing, nudity and violence won’t necessarily put us off, but sexism, racism and other forms of bigotry will.
